ELECTRICAL VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS
Electric vehicles are fitted with an onboard charger that converts alternating current (AC), the type of electricity powering home appliances, to direct current (DC) to charge electric vehicle batteries.
An AC Charger tells the electric vehicle how much power it can draw, based on the capacity of the electrical installation.
DC Chargers are also known as superchargers. This is because they deliver the fastest possible charge rate. However, the high cost of DC charging stations and electrical infrastructure limits their application to public charging facilities, usually at shopping centres.
SAFE CHARGING
Charging electric vehicles involves transmitting high currents, which present a fire and safety risk if not conducted correctly.
For example, you should never use an extension cord with a portable electric vehicle charger.
Using a domestic socket to charge your electric vehicle is only safe if a licensed electrician performs the electrical installation.
Level 2 charging stations need to be installed by a licensed electrician who can issue a CoC for the installation.
ELECTRIC VEHICLE PLUGS
The Type 2 plug is the standard plug for electric vehicle AC charging in South Africa. This plug supports single or three-phase AC charging. A Combined Charging System (CCS 2) is an extension of the Type 2 plug and provides direct current (DC) contacts for fast, high-power charging. It is the standard for all public DC charging stations in South Africa.
The first-generation Nissan Leaf is the only electric vehicle in South Africa that uses the Type 1 plug.
ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS AT HOME
If you are thinking about buying an electric vehicle, you might want to have a charging station at home since charging stations in public areas aren’t always conveniently located. In addition, many electric vehicle manufacturers recommend that buyers consider having an electric vehicle charging station installed on their properties.
Should you decide to do so, it is essential to use a qualified electrician who can provide the necessary certification.
